August Is Psoriasis Awareness Month

August Is Psoriasis Awareness Month
August 13, 2026Western MD DermatologyMedical Articles

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month—a time to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and remind those living with psoriasis that support and effective treatment options are available. At Western Maryland Dermatology, we believe clearer, more comfortable skin begins with personalized care and a conversation with a dermatology professional.

Psoriasis Is More Than “Dry Skin”

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can cause raised, scaly patches called plaques. It may affect the scalp, elbows, knees, hands, feet, nails, skin folds, and other areas of the body. Symptoms can include itching, discomfort, flaking, nail changes, and—in some people—joint pain or stiffness.

Psoriasis can look different from person to person and across different skin tones. For many, it is more than a visible skin concern; it can affect comfort, confidence, daily routines, and quality of life.

You Don’t Have To Manage It Alone

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to psoriasis care. A dermatologist can evaluate your skin, discuss your symptoms and possible triggers, and build a treatment plan around your individual needs.

Depending on the type and severity of psoriasis, treatment options may include:

  • Prescription topical medications
  • Light therapy
  • Oral medications
  • Injectable or biologic medications
  • Skin-care guidance and strategies for identifying potential triggers

Dermatology treatment plans may help relieve itch, reduce scale and plaques, address nail symptoms, and improve skin comfort.

When To Schedule An Appointment

Consider seeing a dermatologist if you have persistent itchy, scaly, or uncomfortable patches; changes to your nails; a rash that is not improving with over-the-counter products; or joint pain, swelling, or morning stiffness along with skin symptoms. A professional evaluation can help determine whether psoriasis—or another condition—may be involved.

Let’s Raise Awareness Together

Living with psoriasis is nothing to hide. This month, we encourage our community to lead with compassion, share accurate information, and support friends, family members, and neighbors who may be navigating this condition.

If psoriasis is affecting your skin, comfort, or confidence, Western Maryland Dermatology is here to help you explore care options tailored to you. Schedule an appointment today and take the next step toward healthier skin.
