Shine Safely: July is UV Awareness Month

Shine Safely: July is UV Awareness Month
July 10, 2026Western MD DermatologyIdeasTips

July brings sunshine, vacations, and more time outdoors—but it also brings increased exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. At Western Maryland Dermatology, UV Awareness Month is the perfect reminder to protect your skin and reduce your risk of long-term damage.

Why UV Protection Matters

UV rays from the sun are the leading cause of skin damage, premature aging, and skin cancer. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can still reach your skin. Over time, repeated exposure without protection can lead to:

  • Sunburn and skin irritation
  • Wrinkles and premature aging
  • Dark spots and uneven skin tone
  • Increased risk of skin cancer, including melanoma

Simple Ways to Protect Your Skin

Protecting your skin doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, consistent habits can make a big difference:

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating
  • Wear protective clothing, wide-brim hats, and sunglasses
  • Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM)
  • Avoid tanning beds

Don’t Skip Your Skin Checks

Early detection is key when it comes to skin cancer. Perform monthly self-exams and keep an eye out for changes in moles or new spots. Look for the ABCDEs:

  • Asymmetry
  • Border irregularity
  • Color variation
  • Diameter larger than a pencil eraser
  • Evolving shape or size

If you notice anything unusual, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist right away.

Healthy Skin is Year-Round

UV protection isn’t just for beach days. Daily exposure—whether you’re driving, walking the dog, or running errands—adds up over time. Making sun protection part of your daily routine helps keep your skin healthy and looking its best.

At Western Maryland Dermatology, we’re here to help you protect, treat, and maintain your skin at every stage. This UV Awareness Month, take a moment to prioritize your skin—it’s the only one you’ve got.

Ready for a skin check or have questions about sun protection? Contact our office today to schedule your appointment.
