Treatment for Acne

Treatment for Acne
June 24, 2019Western MD DermatologyMedical Articles

If you have an adolescent suffering from severe acne, you should consider professional medical dermatology. Besides being the prudent option medically, treating unsightly blemishes can help adolescent self-confidence and promote a positive body image.

Acne is very common with about 80% of adolescents experiencing some form of acne every year. Depending on the severity of the acne, there are treatments available to help clear up the acne quickly and without the need for antibiotics. If you are experiencing moderate or severe acne, we recommend treatment.

Moderate acne is defined as having 20-100 whiteheads or blackheads, 15-50 inflamed bumps, or 30-125 lesions. Severe acne would be anything above those ranges, but also includes widespread and significant body coverage and areas of major scarring.

One of the best methods for treating acne is blue light therapy. Blue light therapy can treat acne and control the condition making it the optimal choice for continuing treatment. Blue light therapy uses the blue wavelength range to kill the bacteria that causes acne (propionbacterium acnes). Blue light therapy has no recovery time and has few, if any adverse effects. This treatment has shown great results when treating mild to moderate acne. With severe cases, blue light therapy can help but will not provide the significant reduction needed for severe cases. Western Maryland Dermatology also offers other acne treatments like oral and topical antibiotics, hormonal treatments, tretinoin, and extraction.
