Tips for Healthy Winter Skin

Tips for Healthy Winter Skin
November 14, 2019Jennifer ElliottMedical Articles

The cold winter months are upon us, which means dry itchy, irritated skin.  Western Maryland Dermatology wants to help you take care of your dry, irritated skin this winter.

  1. Purchase a Humidifier
    • This will add moisture to your home or work place, keeping your skin hydrated.
  2. Lower the thermostat to avoid dryness in the air
    • Control your heat to a comfortable setting, 68F-72F
  3. Reduce Shower Time and Temperature
    • We know nothing feels better than a long, hot shower. However, your skin should only be in a 5-10 minute lukewarm shower/bath to avoid dry skin. You should also avoid using hot water while washing your hands. If your hands turn red, it is too hot.
  4. Use Gentle, Fragrance-Free Cleaners
    • Using certain soaps can worsen your dry, itchy skin. Try using fragrance free moisturizing cleanser.  Using less soap overall will also prevent winter skin issues.
  5. Modify Facial Skin- Care Regimen
    • Select cream-based cleansers, and apply toners sparingly. When you have dry, itchy skin, AAD recommends to stop using products that contain alcohol and fragrances to help your skin maintain its natural oils.
  6. Moisturize Often
    • Applying hand cream after washing can help with dry itchy skin.
  7. Apply Sunscreen
    • Yes that’s right, sunscreen is necessary even in the cold months. Whether you are on the slopes, playing in the snow, or just walking, it is important to have sunscreen.
  8. Wear appropriate clothing
    • Avoid wearing wool and rough clothes directly on your skin. Wear light soft layers against your skin before adding the heavier sweaters. Always protect your hands with gloves or mittens and find a pair that won’t irritate your skin.
  9. Eat Right and Stay Hydrated
  10. Change out of wet clothes quickly
    • Wearing wet clothes for any period of time can irritate your skin.
